Frequently asked questions
Got questions? We've got answers.
I would be lying if I said yes, which is not the best sales pitch. The answer is it'll help you be more aware, help guide you, and hopefully climb harder. There are plenty of people that just lift hard and get bigger and stronger, just play basketball and get better, or insert whatever activity you want here. However, at a certain point almost everyone can benefit from some structure to gain awareness of how their training looks like and that's where BetaGains wants to help.
Technique is obviously more important, however I don't believe this platform is the best to measure it. A skilled coach watching you climb is going to be a better investment in that regard. However, we hope to work with coaches in the future so if they tell you to work 'heavy feet' more, they can see how often you attempted that in the last month.
To simplify the user interface and experience, we only implemented flash, not onsight. We wanted to avoid the confusion and extra buttons.
Currently, we leave the grading in your hands. We've all been on a sanbagged and soft routes. Put the grade you believe the route is; this is your journey.
BetaGains works completely offline. Everything saves locally and syncs to the cloud when you're back online.
You have the option to select 10%, 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100% of the route completed and log falls & takes. This can provide greater insight into your overall effort and try-hard sessions. For example you can track your limit boulders and assess how often you touch these types of problems.
BetaGains will be free to use with core tracking features. We're still finalizing what premium features might look like, but logging your climbs won't cost you anything.
Your data syncs to secure cloud storage, so your climbing history survives any phone mishap. Just log in on your new device and pick up where you left off.

Built by a Climber, for Climbers

Nick Mackowski
Weekend Warrior at the Red
Hi, I'm Nick. I'm a weekend warrior... or occasional every other weekend warrior. I used to do human performance research with the Air Force and currently work with people analytics at NASA. It's also a lot of work trying to be a mediocre climber.
Why BetaGains?
Runners track weekly mileage. Lifters log sets and reps. The rare climber will track their training, which is fair because it's messy. This will be refined over time but we're not there yet, and I want BetaGains to assist with that.
Right now BetaGains is descriptive, it shows you what you've been climbing. I want to eventually move to diagnostic: telling you that you need more circuits, ropes, or volume to improve your outdoor sport climbing. Then even more eventually to perscriptive: you have a better chance of sending our outdoor overhanging 12b project if you do 12 more rope sessions per week for the next 6 weeeks.
